Symphony No. 3: Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt / NW German Radio Symphony Orchestra

Since its release in 1954, the Allegro Royale LP of the Bruckner Symphony No. 3 has been a controversial recording. Not only did it offer the first recording of the newly edited version of 1878 as prepared by Fritz Oeser (1911-1982), but it presented a conductor that nobody had heard of before - Gerd Rubahn. It didn't take long for people to figure out that there was no Maestro Rubahn - that he was simply the invention of Allegro Royale's producer Eli Oberstein. Whether the actual conductor was generally known during that time cannot be determined but as we moved into the 1980's the identity was certainly a mystery.

But recent research had discovered the true identity of the performers and along with that announcement, I am happy to present the recording along with its new identity.

The recording comes with a reproduction of the front and back cover of the Allegro Royale LP and is reproduction of the label on the face of the CD. It also comes with notes explaining the discovery of the true performers.
