Bruckner's home in Windhaag

Bruckner's home in Windhaag
Bruckner spent some unhappy years as an assistant school teacher in the small town of Windhaag in rural upper austria. He lived there from 1841 - 1843 when he got a transfer to the town of Kornstorf. There are two buildings in Windhaag that Bruckner frequented: the schoolhouse and the home of the head teacher.

Just this year, the schoolhouse has undergone a renovation. What was usually a building completely closed off to the public, it now has a giftshop that is open to the public.

Unfortunately, the house where Bruckner lived has not fared as well. When we first visited the house at 9 Anton Brucknerstrasse in 2015, it was well maintained and the little plaque on the front of the house was clearly visible.

By 2018, the house was run down and the bush below the plaque was overgrown and we had to sneak onto the property to get a glimpse of it.

On the 2024 tour, I went down to the house only to find it in greater disrepair. Local residents say that there was a fire inside proving to make it uninhabitable. Perhaps the fire resulted from burning all that cord wood! The 2024 tour did not have time to walk to this house and the bus was not allowed on the road. The 2024 pictures were provided to me by a person who lives in a neighboring town.
