Sony Classics to record a Bruckner symphony cycle
Christian Thielemann
Sony Classics will be releasing this fall a performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 with Christian Thielemann conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. It is the first release in a projected cycle of Bruckner's eleven symphonies (00-9) that will be released with the same forces between now and 2024, the bicentennial of Bruckner's birth.

This is the first time that the VPO will be recording a Bruckner cycle with the same conductor. It will also include the first VPO performances of the early symphonies in f and d minor. In announcing their intentions of recording the early symphonies, the VPO stated, We are grateful to perform Bruckner's so-called “Studiensymphonie” (Symphony in F minor) and the “annulierte” Symphonie (Symphony in D minor) with Maestro Christian Thielemann at Musikverein! Both symphonies have a special character in several aspects. Both come from the composer's early symphonic period and indicate his search for a typical personal style. Besides, both works were never performed during Bruckner's lifetime, and they have never been on our program to this day.

The recordings will be released on CD. This will be Thielamann's second recorded cycle. The first was released on video with the Staatskapelle Dresden. An earlier cycle was started with the Munich Philharmonic, but that was abandoned when Thielamann moved to Dresden.
