In Memoriam: Eduardo Chibás
Chibás was a very successful advertising executive in Caracas but his true avocation was music - especially the music of Beethoven, Wagner and Anton Bruckner. Since 1992, when he conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela in Wagner’s Meistersinger Prelude, Eduardo Chibás carved out a solid trajectory as an orchestral conductor. He made numerous recordings during his career which he released on his own label. In 2008, the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal put on sale a collection of 10 recordings of Eduardo Chibás and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela with sales of almost 200,000 CD's. Chibás recorded Bruckner's last three symphonies and they have been offered on this website since their initial release. I was fortunate to have been in attendance for the performance / recording of the Symphony No. 9 in 2007. Eduardo was a perceptive businessman, a gifted conductor, a skilled audio engineer and a relentless debater who loved to challenge people on just about any subject. But most of all for me, he was a great friend and advocate. He will be sorely missed. Un abrazo, Eduardo! |
