March, 2023: Symphony No. 2: Erich Schmid / Southwest German RSO / Point Classics

Like our February download, this is another excellent Bruckner performance issued on CD by Point Classics. The label credits the performers as Hans Zanotelli and the South German Philharmonic. But again, this is incorrect. Unlike last month, here we know the actual performers. They are Erich Schmid conducting the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. The performance was recorded on September 25, 1965. There are other CDs of a different Bruckner 2nd attributed to Zanotelli, but that recording was actually conducted by Carl Melles, But before we relegate Hans Zanotelli to the Pseudonym dust bin, let's consider the fact that Maestro Zanotelli (1927-1993) actually has a recording of Bruckner motets on the Profil label and the Bruckner archive has a Zanotelli recording of the Bruckner Symphony No. 6 produced for broadcast by the North German Radio (NDR).
