He musical abilities blossomed at an early age and in 1977, he was a finalist in the Herbert von Karajan conducting competition. For the next few years, Tchakarov guest conducted the major orchestras in Europe, North America, and Asia. He entered into a contract with the Leningrad Philharmonic and his career seemed assured. But Emil Tchakarov died in Paris in 1991 at the age of 43. Very few recordings by Tchakarov have reached the public, but Melodiya did record him conducting the Bruckner Symphony No. 4 and released it in a two LP set. It is long out-of-print and was never issued on CD.
